Senate Passes Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act

Today, the U.S. Senate passed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act with a bipartisan vote of 69-30. In addition to investments in roads and bridges, this bill includes investments in clean energy transmission, lead pipe removal, public transit, electric vehicle charging stations, reclaiming abandoned mines, and plugging orphaned gas wells.

In response, YECA National Organizer and Spokesperson Tori Goebel released the following statement:

“Over 255 young Christians joined us in calling on Congress to include bold climate and environmental provisions in a final infrastructure package because it is well past time to address climate change. Just yesterday, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a new report that highlights the urgency of the climate crisis. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act alone is not sufficient to address our changing climate, but it is a welcome and needed step from Congress.

“The far-reaching impacts of climate change are deeply disproportionate and our leaders have a moral obligation to respond. YECA is thankful for the leadership of Senators Manchin (D-WV), Carper (D-DE), and the 19 Republican Senators who supported the bill, Senators Blunt (R-MO), Burr (R-NC), Capito (R-WV), Cassidy (R-LA), Collins (R-ME), Cramer (R-ND), Crapo (R-ID), Fischer (R-NE), Graham (R-SC), Grassley (R-IA), Hoeven (R-ND), McConnell (R-KY), Murkowski (R-AK), Portman (R-OH), Risch (R-ID), Romney (R-UT), Sullivan (R-AK), Tillis (R-NC) and Wicker (R-MS). We thank these leaders for rising above partisan politics and passing this important bill to jumpstart economic recovery and invest in a cleaner future.

“This is just the beginning and there is more work yet to be done. We call on Congress to fulfill its moral responsibility to boldly address the climate crisis at the speed and scale required. It is time for climate justice. Young people are watching and we will not accept anything less.”
