Each year on April 22, people around the world pause to celebrate Earth Day. We take a moment to reflect on the beauty and fragility of the natural world as well as to recommit ourselves to defending it. For us Christians, this day holds spiritual meaning. Creation care isn’t just a trend or check box—it’s an act of worship. Not worship of nature but a response to the God who “saw all that He had made, and it was very good” (Genesis 1:31).
This Earth Day, we’re reminded that the work of caring for God’s creation is holy work. Whether it’s reducing our waste, planting a garden, organizing a climate justice event, or simply spending time in nature in prayerful gratitude, every action rooted in love matters. It’s a way of living out the greatest commandments: to love God and love our neighbors - including future generations who will inherit this planet. On Easter Sunday, we praised Jesus’ resurrection and victory over sin. Now, we partner with Him on Earth Day to defend life by being who God calls us to be: compassionate, justice-seeking, truth tellers.
Take action with us. Reach out to your church about incorporating creation care into its ministry. Support policies that protect people and the planet–you can start by joining us in sending a message to the EPA and Members of Congress! Pray with your community for climate justice. And if you’re a young Christian leader looking to get more involved, consider signing up to be a YECA advocate. Together, let’s live into the hope of resurrection by helping bring renewal to God’s creation—not just on Earth Day, but every day.
How to celebrate Earth Day:
1. Pray for Creation Start or end your day with a prayer for the Earth, those most affected by climate change, and ask for courage to be faithful stewards. Consider reading Psalm 104 or Romans 8 as part of your quiet time.
2. Get Outside & Connect Take time this week to experience the wonder of creation—go for a walk, have lunch outdoors, or sit in silence in a park. Let His spirit speak to you.
3. Host a Climate Conversation Gather your church small group, student club, or friends for a discussion on climate justice. YECA has resources you can use to help guide the conversation.
4. Reduce, Reuse, Reimagine Take one small step to cut down your environmental impact: bring a reusable bag, skip single-use plastics, or try a meatless meal. Invite someone else to do the same!
5. Plant Something Plant a tree, some pollinator-friendly flowers, or even start a windowsill herb garden.
6. Advocate with Hope Call or write to your local representatives, urging them to support climate policies that reflect care for creation and neighbor. Speak with wisdom and conviction, as ambassadors of Christ.
7. Support Young Leaders Follow and support YECA’s fellows as they lead on climate action in their communities. Share their stories, amplify their work, or make a donation to help expand their impact.
