Join YECA's Steering Committee!

Group of young people outside in matching blue and orange YECA tshirts

YECA’s Steering Committee is a group of roughly 10-12 people dedicated to assisting with the strategic visioning of YECA and supporting operations through a number of sub-committees. We are young (under 31) Christians who are passionate about climate action as an outward expression of our faith, regardless of our professional work.

The group meets every three weeks as a full committee as well as in between within subcommittees. In addition, we gather bi-annually for an expenses-paid, in-person retreat to reconnect and continue our work.

Opportunities:

  • Join a community of like-minded individuals who are passionate about acting on climate and pursuing environmental justice as an expression of faith.
  • Gain new skills that align with your professional goals – including but not limited to managing communications and finances, integrating DEI into an organization’s programming, mentoring students, fundraising and grant writing, and engaging with media and public speaking.
  • Learn more about strategies being used to address the climate crisis.
  • Participate in expenses-paid, twice-yearly weekend retreats with the full Steering Committee.

Expectations of Steering Committee members:

  • Commit to regular attendance on the tri-weekly meeting.
  • Commit to regular attendance of at least one subcommittee meeting.
    • Subcommittees meet monthly and include Civic Engagement, Fundraising, Equity and Justice, Rising Leaders, Spirituality and Congregational Support, Membership, and Communications.
  • Commit to attending the twice-yearly weekend retreat of the full Steering Committee.
    • Travel expenses are reimbursed, Recent locations have included Washington, DC, Chicago, and Boston.
    • Retreats often occur in January/February and August/September.
  • Sign the YECA Statement of Affirmation.
  • Review both our Commitment to Anti-Racism and our Statement of Welcome and Inclusion, which you will be expected to affirm if joining the committee.
  • SC members are involved in some capacity in our fundraising efforts. Members can also make a personal financial donation of any amount to YECA either monthly or annually, if they feel so called.

Qualifications:

  • Be under 31 years of age
  • Identify as a Christian who maintains a Christian life and witness (actively participate in one’s worship tradition).
  • Be committed to climate action
  • Commit to activity fulfilling the duties of a Steering Committee member

FAQ:

  • What is the expected time commitment? While the responsibilities may ebb and flow a fair amount over the course of a year, Steering Committee members in general can expect to spend 5-10 hours per month on YECA work.
  • How do you define Evangelical? We at YECA recognize the complexity and mixed connotations of the word “evangelical” in today’s landscape. Within the Steering Committee, we have a variety of relationships with this label and its implications, and we would be glad to speak to you about any specific questions. We do ask Steering Committee members to sign our Statement of Affirmation listed above. Most broadly, we understand “evangelical” to mean that the good news of Jesus Christ is good news for the entire world.
  • What sort of experience do you require? We recognize that this movement needs everyone – not just the people who have traditionally identified as environmentalists, but everyone who cares about climate and is passionate about working on environmental issues in a faith-rooted context. We believe that your lived experiences and skills can benefit the Steering Committee. The only requirements are that you are a Christian, are passionate about climate action, and are willing to put your skills to the cause. In the past, we’ve had teachers, non-profit leaders, farmers, activists, recent grads, higher education staff, people in finance, and more.
